Healthy Hot Chocolate Recipe
By Dr. Josh Axe
December 30, 2022
It's that time of year! Hot chocolate season! But if you're like me, you're not necessarily a fan of slurping down a sickly sweet, hot liquid version of a chocolate candy bar. Instead, you seek something with a more balanced flavor that leans more towards chocolate than sweet.
The key? Use better quality chocolate (namely 80 percent dark chocolate and raw cacao powder), coconut milk instead of dairy milk and Bone Broth Protein Chocolate! In other words, you'll now have a more sophisticated tasting hot chocolate but also one that is more filling with both performance fats (courtesy of the coconut milk and the quality chocolate) and protein. With the bone broth and raw cacao powder, it's also a superfood hot chocolate.
In fact, this hot chocolate recipe is a perfect macronutrient drink, with 27 grams of carbs (much fewer than the average hot cocoa), 23 grams of fat and 10 grams of protein. This higher protein hot chocolate comes from Bone Broth Protein or Multi Collagen Protein Chocolate, both of which offer gut, skin and joint support.
In a medium pot, add in coconut milk, dark chocolate bar, bone broth powder, raw cacao powder, maple syrup and vanilla. Turn the heat up to medium-low and let the mixture melt. Whisk the hot cocoa mixture until it's well-combined.
Pour into two mugs and top with whipped coconut cream, if you desire. Add a dash of cinnamon to the top. Serve immediately.
Looking for another sweet, healthy hot drink? Try our apple cider recipe.
Wondering what to pair this hot chocolate with? Try any of these, depending on the time of year:
